Shopping with a para-friend.

“Think of it as an “Investment Piece”, says she. (Just when I thought I had heard everything there was to hear, ever). Fingering the smooth tweed of the “super-flared” leg of the Chanel trousers she had just bought.

I had just bought. Tying the black ribbon over the top of the vast Tote bag...

“You don’t like women all that much, Robert, do you?”, she began.

“Not much”.

“Can I ask Why?”.

(I knew she would have to ask). No heart to correct her- not “Can I ask”- it’s “May I...”. The Permissive, Singular. Both of us. The occupational hazard of having been, and met, as a lecturer somewhere, “just outside Boston”. When I was young enough to know better.

“They’re too honest. For my liking”, I answered. “Even when they’re lying”.

She looked. I said.

“Superficial. Almost as much as I am”.

After a pause, she added.

“Shouldn’t that be, “Am I”?
